whatever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Phil 4:8

The Power And Choice Of Words

“If you didn’t realise, whatever you say is either a curse or blessing. There is no in between.” Phillip, LEAP II Trainer

“Life and death lies in the tongue.” Proverbs

Realise that I really love words, especially those aptly stringed together. Those words which, you know, are strategically used to produce an effect: to empower, to influence, to cause inspiration and to breathe life.

Share with you guys some of the most beautiful words I came across this week:
——–

By Henry David Thoreau

I went to the woods
because I wished to live deliberately
to front
only the essential facts of life
and see
if I could learn what it had to teach
and not
when I came to die
discover that I had not lived
I did not wish to live what was not life
living is so dear
nor did I wish
to practice resignation
unless it was quite necessary
I wanted to live deep
and suck out all the marrow of life
to live so sturdily
and Spartan-like
as to put to rout all that was not life
to cut a broad swath and shave close
to drive life into a corner
and reduce it to its lowest terms
and, if it proved to be mean
why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it
and publish its meanness to the world
or if it were sublime
to know it by experience

Second:

From my friend/boss’ Friendster profile,

Thought of koping the words to put on my own Friendster. But if she see le I’d feel like a cheapskate. So cool right? It’s about exactly the kind of people I want to meet.

The power of words. Amazing. How sweet they are!

The Weight of Words

The same words can be spoken by different people and they will have different effects.

Though all of us are entitled to our thoughts and opinions and some feel very passionate about certain subjects, people generally follow those who have attained a level of success in the area where they share, especially in their field of work, inter-personal relationships and family.

Consider the difference in impact when a rich man and a poor man when they say “there are better things in life than having great wealth.”

Consider the difference in impact
when the top scholar in school and the below average student says that “I got my grades because I put God first in my life and studies.”

Consider the difference in impact when a man of character and a fool says that God moulds use through the trials and tribulation. ( The latter suffers for his foolishness. )

Consider the difference in impact when a proven soldier in the battlefield and a soldier who deserted his comrades say “war is futile.” The proven soldier’s words will provoke thinking.

Consider the difference in impact when a godly man and a hypocrite say “God’s gentleness has made me great.” The latter’s words is disgusting.

For words to weigh, it will take:

A Hardy to share about giving,

A Cechao to share about love and kind words,

A Yang Zheng to share about serving,

A Jimmy to share about business leadership,

A Zhenghao to share about excellence in academics,

A Johnson to share about loving the lost,

A Nancy to share about the merits of having a guitar during QT,

A Peishan to share about intellect and excellence,

An Elaine or Sherilyn to share about creativity… and so on..

Therefore, it is not really about how eloquent we can be, but really, who we are.

Observe the traits of your mentors and those you want to learn from. These people have the knack of influencing you and their words someone seemed more valuable than others who can say the same thing.

The influence of the Church today is the sum total of the influence of each and every member in the Body of Christ out there in the marketplace. To bring kristos kai kosmos, we must constantly seek to lead lives with integrity, that is, a life where others see is consistent with what is inside us.

To see our world change, we must change ourselves. Preach only what you practice. If there is any area where we feel strongly that we want others to rise up to, let it begin with us.
