Book Review: Winning By Jack Welch with Suzy Welch

imageProbably one of the best business books I’ve read in a long time.

Running over 350 pages, this winning book gives you great insight to the mind of the man who was at helm of the $400 billion capitalization juggernaut, General Electric, including subjects like

- Hiring and Firing

- Work Life Balance

- Mergers and Acquisitions

- Leadership

My first knowledge of this book came about through Pastor Phil Pringle (Senior Pastor of Christian City Church, Australia). He mentioned having bought some 30-40 copies of this book for his leaders/disciples during a weekend service at CHC.

I always remember that one of the ways to become who you want to be like is to read what they read. And hence this book is in my pipeline of to-reads.

The best takeaways I got from this book is on the subject of letting people go, the psyche of bosses, the importance of candor, heavy-duty resilience (pg 90), winning strategies, finding the right job and crisis management. And if I can only name one thing that Welch managed to drive into me- it’s candor.

Practical, insightful and a book worth keeping for re-reading. (SGD 8.90, second hand from Evernew Bookstore). Find out what Jack Welch’s take on heaven, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the China question. It’s amazing!

Available “preview” here and winning advice here. For those seeking the right career, zoom in to pg 257. =)

From the Rising of the Sun

image

From the rising of the sun
to the going down of the same,
the Lord’s name                                                               is to be praised.

From the rising of the sun
to the going down of the same,
the Lord’s name                                                               is to be praised.

So praise ye the Lord.                                                   Praise ye all the servants of the Lord                               Praise the name of the Lord                                        Blessed be the name of the Lord                                     From this time forth                                                      And forevermore!

Still In Love

with Team 26.

Had our amazingly great BBQ tonight at S’ place. Received very great encouragement from X, A and Y. M gave me something to pass to my mom this morning. I’m touched.

Pictures soon!

And for the lack of a better way to describle it, I would never change team 26 for another. =)

1 More Week!

Our hotel room, Batam Emerge

Graduating in a week! Like I said, the days are long but the months are short. SOT has been a hell heaven of a great time. Love every moment of it. Stretched and grew. Seen the better and worse side of myself and others.

Made many friends – more importantly, none of my days were boring! Quite unlike the way I was ending my uni education! 6.30a.m at Jurong West every morning in the finale week is such a great way to end the SOT experience.

To my dearests in T26 who went through some really rough time the last few days:

I found little words of comfort. A little poem which encourages me in my distress, I hope it’ll do for you too.

I can’t promise the heavens, but my ears are available. =)

ME: Are you a Singaporean?

Stranger: (Shakes head, mumbles) no..

I think I’m mad, but Singapore won – on my favourite game!
